Dr. Hagar ter Kuile, PhD
About Me
I am Dr. Hagar ter Kuile, GZ psychologist. After being born in Israel, I lived in Brussels for several years and then in New York for eight years. As a result, I speak English as a native language, in addition to Dutch. During my high school years, I moved to the Netherlands. Having lived in several countries with very different cultures, I understand from my own experience the challenges of adapting to a new environment. Growing up in a culture different from that of your parents can also be very challenging. I have treated many clients whose mental health was affected by these types of cross-cultural challenges.
Education and Research
During my university studies, I published research on topics such as multilingualism, trauma, and religion. After earning an Honors bachelor's degree and a Research Master's at the University of Amsterdam, I received my PhD from Utrecht University. My doctoral research focused on the transition to parenthood: what happens to the romantic relationship between partners when they have their first child? How do couples cope with major changes and stress?
After receiving my PhD, I decided that my passion lies more in treating people than in research. I get great pleasure and satisfaction from working with people and seeing how they manage to turn their challenges into their strengths, and regain control of their lives. After working for 7 years in a large healthcare organization and completing my training as a Healthcare (GZ) psychologist, I decided to start my own practice. I found working within an institution exciting and challenging, but I wanted more opportunities to be able to tailor treatment to the individual.
I have broad experience in treating trauma, AD(H)D, migration and identity issues, parent-related issues, (mild) personality issues, depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and stress-related symptoms, among others. I use a variety of techniques, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), schema therapy, mindfulness, psychodynamic therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Treatment takes place online and can be delivered in both Dutch and English.
My Approach
I believe in going beyond standard protocols by tailoring treatment to your unique needs and circumstances. I take into account your background and experiences, working with the principle that we are equal partners in the process. Everything is done in consultation and with your consent, ensuring that you remain in control.
We regularly evaluate progress to ensure the treatment continues to align with your goals and preferences. My approach is grounded in empathy, trust, and respect. My aim is to help you gain deeper insight into your thoughts and behaviors, empowering you to take greater control of your life, while providing practical tools to navigate challenging situations.
The Benefits Online Therapy
I choose to offer online therapy because it is convenient, approachable, and flexible. This approach makes therapy more accessible and easier to integrate into daily life. I use the NiceDay app to enhance the effectiveness of our sessions. With NiceDay, you can log your daily feelings, thoughts, events, or completed exercises. I can review these entries between sessions and provide feedback or send supportive messages, helping to keep our progress on track.
Professional Development
I regularly participate in intervision sessions, am a member of the Psychologists Network Amstelland (https://www.psychologennetwerkamstelland.nl/) and attend courses, as I believe it is essential to continually develop myself and keep my professional knowledge up to date. This ensures that I can consistently provide high-quality care. ..
